Mary Hughee

Well done, good and faithful servant...” – Matthew 25:23 Mary Francis Hughee, affectionately known as "Francis" by her family, was born on June 23, 1943, to the late Lucille and Andrew Hughee. Raised with strong values and a deep faith, Mary’s life was marked by a passion for service, education, and spiritual leadership. Mary moved to Baltimore, Maryland to pursue higher education at Morgan State University. After completing her studies, she made Baltimore her home, although she often returned to visit her family. Her professional life was rooted in education, where she served with distinction as a Physical Education teacher, coach, and referee in the Baltimore City Public Schools. She officiated and coached in sports such as volleyball, badminton, tennis, and more. Beyond the classroom, Mary invested her energy into the CC Jackson Recreation Center, where she guided and mentored countless boys and girls over the years. A nurturer by nature, Mary Hughee was a devoted supporter of young people. Her kindness and generosity left a lasting impression on all who knew her. Among those she mentored was Bishop Vernetta Cromwell, her goddaughter, who became like a daughter to her. Bishop Cromwell lovingly cared for her godmother for many years and remained by her side as her faithful caregiver until the Lord called Mary home. Mary’s commitment to her faith defined her life. As Elder Mary Hughee, she was a kingdom builder, prayer warrior, intercessor, and a Spirit-filled soldier for the Lord. She worshiped and served in several churches throughout Baltimore, always seeking to uplift and expand God’s kingdom. Elder Mary was known for her deep compassion and unwavering generosity—feeding the hungry, helping the needy, and giving freely to those in need. She was a fierce advocate for the poor, the sick, and the homeless, always coupling her giving with fervent prayer. Her legacy is one of faith, service, and love. Elder Mary Hughee will forever be remembered for her enduring trust in God and her steadfast work on His battlefield. A true Christian soldier, she fought the good fight and has now entered her eternal rest. She is survived by two brothers, Curtis Hughee of West Palm Beach, Florida, and Herbert Hughee of Florence, South Carolina; one sister, Wilhelmina Smith of Jamaica, New York; several godchildren; a host of spiritual children; extended family; friends; former students; and loved ones who will forever cherish her memory and strive to carry on her legacy of selfless service and unwavering faith.
