James "Big Jim" Staton

JAMES HENRY STATON departed this earthly life on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, at the age of 90. Born and raised in Pinetops, North Carolina, James was the beloved son of the late Deacon Charles Staton and Mariah Lancaster Staton. After graduating from G.W. Carver High School, James enlisted in the United States Army in May 1954. He faithfully served three years on active duty and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal in recognition of his honorable service. Following his military service, James attended North Carolina A&T; College in Greensboro, North Carolina. There, he met and married Doris Marie Sims. Midway through college, the couple relocated to Baltimore, Maryland, where James began a distinguished 39-year career with SCM Chemicals. After making Baltimore their home, they welcomed two sons, James H. Staton, Jr. and Alton L. Staton, completing their young family. James had a lifelong passion for music that became one of the defining joys of his life. Known throughout Baltimore as “Big Jim,” he was one of the city’s most respected DJs, traveling to venues across the region to provide music for countless events and celebrations. For 32 years, James was a beloved radio personality on 88.9 WEAA, where he hosted the popular programs “Turning Back the Hands of Time” and “Blues in the Night.” Through his warm personality, extensive music knowledge, and dedication to his listeners, he built a loyal fan base and became a cherished voice in the Baltimore community. James was preceded in death by his parents, Deacon Charles Staton and Mariah Lancaster Staton; two brothers, William Staton and John Dorsey Staton and his sister Catherine Wooten. He leaves to cherish his memory: the love of his life, Cynthia Staton; his two sons, James H. Staton, Jr. and Alton L. Staton; seven grandchildren, Alicia Booe, Candice Staton, James H. Staton III, Michelle Hudson, Altresa Staton, Latresa Floyd, and Kevon Staton; seven great-grandchildren; brother, Tommie Lee Staton; two sisters, Leah S. Vines and Annie Mae Ellis; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends. He lovingly considered all of his nieces and nephews to be his favorites. James will be remembered for his unwavering love of family, faithful service to his country, dedication to music, and the joy he brought to generations of listeners. Whether behind the microphone, behind the turntables, or surrounded by those he loved, he lived a life of purpose, generosity, and passion. His legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
