Mary Demory Faulkner

On January 14, 2024, Mary departed this Earth to dwell forever in a far better place. MARY DEMORY FAULKNER was born on February 28, 1948, in Northampton County, North Carolina to the late Lee Roy Demory and Lillie Mae Williams Demory. She was the second child born to the young couple. The family moved to Baltimore City when she was very young. Mary started her formal education at a private kindergarten because there was no kindergarten at the public school at that time. She began her public-school education at Victory Elementary School #154 and #238 located on Chesapeake Ave in the community of Fairfield followed by Benjamin Franklin Junior High School and Eastern High School. She continued her education and in 1977, obtained a master’s degree in criminal justice. Later in life, she attended Loyola and Goucher Colleges, obtaining an Advanced Professional Certificate in education. During the 1970’s, Mary taught for four years in the Baltimore City Public School System. She then accepted a position with the Department of Juvenile Services. As a juvenile counselor, Mary provided services to troubled youth and their families for many years. It was while working at the Department of Juvenile Services that she met and married Michael Andrew Faulkner. Michael and Mary were blessed with two precious daughters, Monique and Monica. Mary was also blessed with a wonderful stepdaughter, Sandra. Monique and Monica were raised in a Christian home. Mary joined St. Mark United Methodist Church. Attending church with her family gave Mary great joy. She took great pride in serving as a communion steward and serving in her church wherever needed. Mary also served in the finance room for several years, was a member of the St. Mark Women of Faith, and co-chairperson of the Caring Ministry. Being active was natural for Mary. She served on numerous PTA committees, was an active member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc., and a life member of the Coppin State University Alumni Association. She also was a member of several other educational organizations. Mary enjoyed bowling, attending bible study classes, dancing, and participating in various exercise classes. After several years at Juvenile Services, Mary returned to the field of education. She accepted a teaching position with the Anne Arundel County School System. Obituary Mary willingly accepted any challenge. During her teaching career, she taught grades one through five, but loved first to grade the best. Mary served as a primary lead teacher, teacher in charge, and on numerous committees. Soon after retiring from Anne Arundel Schools, Mary realized that she missed education and accepted a position with Baltimore County Public Schools. There she was employed as a special education para-educator, Title 1 resource teacher, and math resource teacher. Mary was a mentor to many young teachers, providing wisdom and support in and out of the classroom setting. After working eight years in Baltimore County Public Schools, Mary became a parent volunteer at Winand Elementary School. She performed many duties and enjoyed helping the staff and children and keeping a watchful, loving eye on her granddaughter, Eden. Mary was predeceased by her husband, Michael and oldest daughter, Monique. Mary leaves to cherish her memory: her daughter, Monica Faulkner; stepdaughter, Sandra Coby (Kevin); sister, Ellen Ramirez (Enrique); brothers, Ronnie Demory and Rodney Demory; granddaughters, Alexis Coby, Aryn Coby, and Eden Alston; aunt, Esther Mae Lockhart; uncle, Roosevelt Demory (Dorothy); nephews, Mark Demory and Carlo Harris; nieces, Renee Walker and Sade Demory; goddaughter, Jackie Knight; godmother, Vivian Murray; adopted brother, Berkley Brice Sampson; special friends, Doretha Hebron (Dee), Helen Hiltner, and Patricia Pitts; a special childhood friend; and a host of great nephews/nieces, cousins, and friends.
