Hattie Mae Ross

HATTIE MAE ROSS was born Hattie Mae Creech to the late Annie and Clifford Creech on March 26, 1944 in Baltimore, MD. She was a devoted member of the usher board at Mt. Hebron Baptist Church for many decades, and she was as much a woman of her community as she was a woman of God. Ms. Ross was affectionately called by many names: “Hattie Mae,” “Sis,” “Mom,” “Nana,” “Aunt Hattie,” “HR,” and (“Babe” by her loving husband Preston M. Ross, who preceded her in 2014). She was also known as “Ms. Ross the Boss,” but she was known by most people as “Miss Hattie.” Educated at Douglass High School, Miss Hattie excelled in athletics including track and field (200-meter hurdles), softball, and double-dutch jump rope. Ms. Hattie continued her passion for sports into adulthood as a member of the Baltimore Ladies Professional Duckpin League for decades where she was well known for her awesome split move. It was at one of her bowling games that she met and became close with Mr. Preston Ross, whom she later married. She was also especially fond of the Baltimore Orioles being a true fan whether watching or listening to the games. Ms. Hattie opened her home to any and every one in need of a hot meal, warm hug, or good party! She was the life of every party she attended, so of course she was known for throwing her own memorable parties, spur-of-the-moment gatherings and many, many celebratory events. A party at Ms. Hattie’s was one where the music never stopped and the food never ran out. If there was a challenge to take on, the fearless Ms. Hattie would take it on, no problem. Ms. Hattie was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Preston Ross and her brother, Mr. Walter Creech. Ms. Hattie leaves to mourn: two children, Bonita “Bonnie” McFadden and William “Jay” Johnson, dearest Bridgette; two granddaughters, Kendra and Bryia McFadden; a sister, Eunice Satchell; two nieces, Andrea Satchell and Vernetta Edwards; nephew, Anthony Satchell; two great-nieces, Shannon Furlow and Jordyn Satchell; great-nephew, Michael Furlow Jr.; loving goddaughter, Barbara Finney-El; a long list of cousins, and many more friends.
