Clyde Nathaniel Green, Jr.

On April 19, 2021, God with his infinite mercy and wisdom, gently closed the eyes of Clyde Nataniel Green, Junior and received him into eternal rest. Clyde was born to Clyde N. Green, Sr. and Lola Stewart Green on June 28, 1946, in Clover, VA. He was raised with his brothers Leon and Tyvan, and sister Diann – all of whom preceded him in death. In search of a better life for their children, Clyde, Sr. and Lola moved to Newport News, VA near Lola’s sister Annie Garrett. Clyde often reminisced about his idyllic days fishing on the water bank of Newport News and the great summer break to “the country” of Halifax, VA with his Uncle Calvin Steward and Aunt Minnie. When the Bethlehem Steel Company began offering great employment opportunities in Maryland, Clyde, Sr. and Lola moved their family to Turner’s Station, Baltimore County, MD. In this small, close knit community, Clyde was nurtured by his family and neighbors. He became a Boy Scout under the leadership of Mr. James Louden, Sr., and with the rest of the Green family, Clyde joined the New Shiloh Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. James Everett. In 1964, Clyde graduated from Sollers Point Junior/Senior High School. He continued his education at Maryland State College in Princess Ann, MD (currently named University of Maryland Easter Shore). Clyde graduated from this prestigious institution in 1968, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and a minor in Chemistry. To further his skills, Clyde enrolled in Morgan State University in 1974 where he received a Master of Science degree in Mathematics. Clyde’s credentials gained him employment at the Bethlehem Steel Corporation. Here, he worked as a process control engineer, rolling steel by computer at the 56’ hot strip mill. In this work capacity, Clyde developed numerous patents for which he was generously rewarded. By the early 1980’s, Bethlehem Steel Co. began downsizing. Fortunately, Clyde was able to land a job with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) where he worked as a system analyst. He remained in this job until his retirement in 2016. Clyde was always active as a child, and thus, he participated in many sports. He became a pitching ace. His baseball skills contributed greatly to UMES’ Baseball Championship in 1964. Later in life, Clyde acquired a love for tennis. He became an active and vocal member of the Baltimore Tennis Club, the USTA and the ATA. He received numerous awards for his dedication to BTC’s junior development program. For years, he helped organize the annual summer junior’s tournament which attracted the best tennis players throughout the state of Maryland and Washington, DC. Clyde counted as one of his fondest tennis memories, his trip to Roland Garros where the second leg of the annual grand slam tennis series is held in Paris, France. In addition to Clyde’s sports activities in college, Clyde became a member of the Alpha Phi Omega Service Fraternity. He was elevated to several offices in the graduate chapter and worked diligently until 2017. Clyde was also an active member of the Forest Garden Improvement Association. Like most successful men, Clyde had the advantage of a supportive wife and family. This 53-year relationship began in 1968 while Clyde and Ethel aka “Bunny” were still in college, she in Pennsylvania and he in Maryland. Introduced by a mutual friend, Carolyn McArthur, Clyde and Bunny began what became a lasting relationship. Together, they raised their daughters with love, Clyde and Ethel’s backyard gatherings with family and friends were always joyous occasions filled with good food and fun. Clyde leaves to cherish his memory, his devoted wife Ethel, his faithful daughters, Shannon Green and Leila Green, his loyal grandchildren: Aaron Doram, Sarah Doram, Elizabeth Fields, and Sophia Matsumoto, his loving great-grandchildren: Mekai Polly and Alani Joi Doram, a sister-in-law: Marlana Mitchell (Clarence), a brother-in-law: William Pierce, and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, godchildren, and a host of relatives and friends.
