Jesse Lee Long

In Loving Memory of a Devoted Father, Husband, and Friend Jesse Lee Long, beloved father, grandfather and friend, passed peacefully into the arms of his Lord and Savior on July 6th, at the age of 98. Born on April 15th, 1927 in Ayden, North Carolina, Jesse was the cherished son of the late John and Harriett Long and was lovingly raised by his devoted stepmother, Marie Long. Jesse’s early years were marked by an adventurous spirit and a desire to serve. Though he left school before graduating, he found his calling in the United States Coast Guard, where he proudly served his country during World War II. It was also an experience that continued to feed his curiosity about the world. Never one to settle, Jesse later earned his GED and continued his education by taking several college courses. He was a lifelong learner that would go on to successfully visit many different sites around the globe that had fascinated him since his youth. Jesse’s passion for music was infectious. Whether he was singing gospel in the kitchen or dancing to jazz in the living room, his home was always filled with melody. His vast knowledge and appreciation of music included (but was not limited to) classical composers, Broadway musicals and popular music. He would sometimes recount memories of driving the famed singer, Dinah Washington during one of her series of performances in Baltimore. During his career at Social Security, fate introduced the young widower Jesse to his second wife, Ella Ruth Long. Together, they built a beautiful family. One rooted in love, learning, music, and unwavering support for one another. His devotion to his family was boundless. Kindness was the cornerstone of Jesse’s character. His generosity extended to his wife’s sisters and their children, always offering a helping hand to anyone in need. Family, whether immediate or extended, knew they could count on his warm heart and steady support. Jesse Lee Long was predeceased by his beloved wives, Ella Long and Leona Long; His daughter, Janet Brown; son-in-law, Kenneth Brown; and granddaughter, Melissa Brown. He leaves to honor his memory: his sister-in-law, Hazel Jones; his children, Benjene Swift, Ella-Ruth Stoessel, Danene Young (Harry), Jesse Long, Jr. (Ivonne) and Christian Long and a host of loving grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cherished friends. Jesse’s remarkable life was a testament to the importance of his love of God; His great character and dedication are a legacy that will continue to inspire all who were privileged to know him. May his song live on in the hearts of those he loved.
