Jacqueline Howard

Jacqueline Gainous Howard was born on February 3, 1937, in Washington DC to Waymon and Eula Gainous. Jacqueline was raised and received her early education in the Washington, D.C. Public School system. She attended Spingarn High School, where she distinguished herself academically and socially. Jacqueline was a proud member of the 1st graduating class of Spingarn High School 1956. During her time there, she served as Honor Society President and graduated as the Valedictorian of her class, demonstrating her dedication to scholarship and leadership. Among her classmates was future basketball legend Elgin Baylor. Growing up in Washington, D.C., Jacqueline was active in her neighborhood and became known as a Double Dutch neighborhood champion, reflecting both her energy and her strong community connections. Her professional career included service with the District of Columbia government as a Dictaphone Attendant, where she supported administrative operations. She later continued her public service with the United States Office of Personnel Management as a Proofreader and Stenographer, contributing to the important work of federal administration. Jacqueline was also a breast cancer survivor, demonstrating remarkable strength, faith, and resilience. Her courage during this time inspired those around her and reflected the determination that defined her life. Outside of work, Jacqueline had many passions that reflected her creativity and attention to detail. She loved sewing and crafts, often creating items with care and pride. She also enjoyed collecting trains, clowns, and lighthouses, hobbies that brought her joy and filled her home with unique and meaningful pieces. Jacqueline was one of eight children. She was preceded in death by her brother Gerald Gainous and Redrick Gainous. Her surviving siblings are Jean Wallace, Phillip F. Gainous, Rodney A. Gainous, Venus Bell, Wanda A. Gainous, and Waymon Gainous Jr. Family was central to Jacqueline’s life. She was the loving mother of two children, Wayne R. Howard (Sharron) and Beverly L. Howard. She is a proud grandmother of 3 grandchildren, Damian Walker, Shawn Whitaker and Jeania Derricott, 5 great grandchildren 11 great grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews who brought great joy to her life. Jacqueline G. Howard is remembered for her academic excellence, dedication to public service, love of family, and strong roots in the Washington, D.C. community.
