Gladys Thompson

GLADYS BOWMAN THOMPSON, daughter of the late Selvin and Margaret Bowman, was born on Thursday, June 22 1939, in Sumter, South Carolina with her twin sister, Gloria. Gladys was born first and she always remembered to tell friends, “She is the oldest”. Gladys was united in holy matrimony to the late Melvin L. Thompson in 1961. From this union four children were born, a daughter, Barbara and three sons, Melvin, Michael and Edward Thompson. Gladys attended Jehovah Baptist Church in Sumter, South Carolina where she learned the love of Christ. Being raised in a Christian home with her mother she received Christ at a young age. When she moved to Baltimore, Maryland she joined and attended the Metropolitan Baptist Church for many years and she later moved her membership to United Baptist Church, where she attended until her death. In her senior years, she used a walking cane or a walker but that did not stop Gladys from attending church. Gladys worked for the Baltimore City Public School System for many years as a volunteer assistant for teachers. Gladys exemplified love with a smile. She loved her family very much. She also loved growing flowers in her apartment. Having done and lived her best for Christ, Gladys Bowman Thompson was called home to rest on Monday, April 21 2025, until the second coming of Christ, “The dead in Christ will rise first”. Gladys was preceded in death by her four sisters and two brothers, Ida Kennedy, Geneva Dingle, Elease Mitchell, Lucille Bailey, James Bowman and Henry Bowman. She leaves to cherish her memory: her twin sister, Gloria B. Lee; four children, Barbara Randolph (daughter) and son-in-law Michael Randolph, Melvin B. Thompson (son) and daughter-in-law Tiffiney Thompson, Michael Thompson (son) and daughter-in-law Denise Thompson and Edward Thompson; eight grandchildren, Marsha A. Dupree, Michael A. Thompson Jr., Alexaye Geeter, Raven Dandridge, Tyra Thompson, Xavier Thompson, Kaden Thompson and Porsha Weeden; great-grandchild, Natalia Dandridge; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and her entire United Baptist Church family and friends
