Edward Berko

Edward Berko, 84, passed away in Potomac, Maryland, on Thursday, April 18, 2024, after a valiant battle with several health ailments. Throughout his struggles, he remained resolute in his pursuit of wellness, exhibiting remarkable strength and determination. Despite enduring numerous hospital visits in recent years, he retained an unwavering sense of hope and autonomy, a testament to his resilient spirit. His family is deeply grateful to the dedicated doctors, nurses, and healthcare professionals who provided him with exceptional care during his journey. Edward was born to Kwaku Omari and Madame Adwoa Adomaa in Obo Kwahu, Ghana, on August 2, 1939. Immigrating to the United States in the 1960s, he pursued his education, graduating from Mackin High School in 1969 before earning a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from the University of the District of Columbia. With over three decades dedicated to the field of accounting, Edward retired in 2009 as a Manager for the Government of the District of Columbia. Blessed with a loving family, Edward met his wife, Patience, in Ghana, and together they immigrated to the United States, marrying in 1993. They were together for 54 years and their union blessed them with three children: Richmond, Henry, and Mary. Edward had a profound love for music, particularly the classics from the 1960s and 1970s, with Barbara Streisand and Johnny Mathis among his favorite artists. Classical music held a special place in his heart, often enjoyed through his collection of vinyl records. He delighted in entertaining friends from Ghana, creating memorable gatherings filled with music, fine wine and food on weekends. An aficionado of fashion, Edward had a penchant for timeless, tailored suits and impeccable accessories. Admired by colleagues and friends for his elegance, he frequented downtown D.C. during the late 1970s and 1980s, patronizing Garfinckle’s and Woodward and Lothrop (Woodies). Weekends were often spent at the Woodies tailor, fine-tuning the fit of his garments to perfection. Edward cherished his homeland, Ghana, where he maintained a second home and made visits to reconnect with family and friends. He leaves behind his wife, five children several grandchildren, and siblings. A service honoring Edward's life will take place on May 24, 2024, at 9:00 am at March Life Tribute Center, 7601 Sandy Spring Road, Laurel, MD 20707. Following the service, Edward will be laid to rest at Gates of Heaven Cemetery, 13801 Georgia Ave, Silver Spring, MD 20906.
