Mary Lee Robinson Moore

MARY L. (ROBINSON) MOORE, a “Phenomenal Woman,” was born on November 22, 1938 to the late Alonzo Robinson, Sr. and Julia M. Robinson. She passed peacefully on July 3, 2023. Mary was the first-born girl of her parents. She grew up on The Anderson’s cotton farm off Fire Tower Road. Her family lived in a four-room shack with a tin top, wooden floors, outdoor toilet, and a community well. Mary’s early childhood education began at the Rock Grove School (Rosenwald) and completed high school at Emmett Scott. Mary was the first sibling of seven to attend college. Mary had the fortitude to walk from her house at Fire Tower Road for approximately 5 miles to Friendship Jr. College off Allen Street. Upon graduation from Friendship, she enrolled at Benedict College in Columbia, SC. Mary graduated with a B.S. Degree in Education and began her teaching career in Powhatan, Virginia. She was gracious in sending money home to support her family. Mary eventually was able to bless her family with enough money to enable them to finally get off that farm and buy a house of their own in the lovely City of Porter Road! Mary moved to Baltimore, Maryland in 1966 and completed her 35-year career as an Educator within the Baltimore City Public School System. Mary was a member of Gospel Tabernacle Baptist Church for over 50 years and faithfully served on the Usher Board Ministry. It was at the church that she met and married Gilbert Moore in June of 1969, where they both worshipped and served God together. She also served on the Pastor’s Care and Diamond ministry. For a number of years, she delivered “meals on wheels” to seniors & shut-in citizens in her community. She was philanthropic in giving back to Benedict College, Mt. Hebron Baptist Church, RH-Central City Optimist Club, and Mt. Hebron Dream Keepers Optimist Club, family members, friends, and those loved ones she has touched both near and far. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert Moore; brothers, Alonzo, Jr., Hezekiah; sisters, Lizzie Robinson-Beano, and Ruby Robinson-Thurman. Mary is survived by: two brothers, Pastor John E. Robinson (Betty) of Charlotte, North Carolina and Charles Z. Robinson (Barbara) of Rock Hill, South Carolina; step-son, Bruce Moore (Celeste) and granddaughter, Caryn Moore-Barham (Michael) of Baltimore, Maryland; sister-in-law, Alberta Robinson-Jeter; nieces that were raised by her parents, Marcenia Jennings (Michael) of Rock Hill, South Carolina and Deborah Austin (Darryl) of Charlotte, North Carolina; a nephew who was raised as a brother, Marvin Robinson (Barbara) of Charlotte, North Carolina; and a host of special nieces, nephews, cousins and friends that she loved dearly. Mary spent her life trying to be a blessing to others. It gave her great joy seeing the happiness of others and their success. Our Family is indeed blessed to have Mary etch her footprints in the sands of the Mt. Hebron Baptist Church History as well as the Alonzo & Julia Robinson Legacy.
