Martha Ann Brooks

Wife, mother, sister, and friend - Martha Brooks left a lasting impression on everyone she encountered. Born to Hubert and Anne Marie Davis Green in New Brunswick County, VA, Martha was the middle child of four children. She was raised by Blanche Green, after her mother’s passing. At a young age her family settled in Baltimore, Maryland. Known for her infectious smile, laugh and kind nature, Martha was regarded as a teacher, before she ever had a student. A pupil of the Baltimore City Public School System, she went on to earn her degree in education from Coppin State College, where she was initiated into the Epsilon Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc in 1973. She then married her sweetheart, Bernard Brooks, on August 23, 1975. Martha was a dedicated educator for over 37 years. She faithfully served the students and staff of Bentalou Elementary School for 30 years, until her retirement in 2011. Her commitment extended beyond traditional duties, as she was instrumental in coordinating educational health fairs and the Jump Rope for St. Jude’s program. After retirement - She remained an active member of The Baltimore County Chapter of Les Gemmes Inc., The Maryland Red Hatters, and served on the Board of Woodlawn Senior Center. She also volunteered for many years with the Baltimore County Chapter of the NAACP, Center Stage, and the Arena Players. Her love for inspiring young minds continued, while she mentored young girls in the Gwencilla Program. Martha’s passion for teaching went beyond the classroom and her faith was of the utmost importance, as she dedicated much of her talents to teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. As a member of the Perkins Square Baptist Church for over 47 years, church members and community figures alike, always acknowledged Martha as “A Woman Willing to Help”. Martha will be reunited in Heaven with her husband, Bernard Brooks, and her four siblings. She is survived by her two daughters, Valerie Bennett and Tiffany Brooks; four grandchildren, Kendall Stokes, Taylor Williams, Taja Stokes, and Tahera Bella Martinez; son-in-law, Eric Bennett, her puppy, Alex, and a host of other relatives and friends.
