Juanita Leighton

Juanita Leighton was born in Baltimore, Maryland on September 24, 1942. She was the sixth child of eleven children born to the late James and Lillian Leighton. After a brief illness, she went home to be with the Lord on February 27,2021. Juanita was educated in the Baltimore City Public School System and completed her education at Carver Vocational Technical High. At an early age she accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior and joined New Elizabeth Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. David Leighton. She loved her God and Worship. She was a faithful, avid church member throughout her life at the following places of worship: New Psalmist Baptist Church, under the leadership of Rev. F.C. Atkins, Living Word Christian Center, under the leadership of Rev. David Brown, and Word Alive Christian Center, under the leadership of Pastor Sandra P. Hayden. As she grew spiritually, The Holy Bible became a part of her everyday life and she could quote scripture from cover to cover. Juanita was employed at the Neighborhood Laundromat, which she managed, Penny’s Grocery, and Citi Bank. She was blessed with four children, Richard (Malik) who preceded her in death, Karen (Lisa) Keith and Kenneth (Binkey).Juanita had a giving spirit and supported charities such as, St. Jude’s Children Hospital, 700 Club, Feed The Children, and Wounded Warriors. Nube, as she was affectionately, known by family and friends loved her grandchildren unconditionally. After purchasing “The Beginner’s Bible for each grandchild, she taught them to pray, read scripture, and trust God. Nube had a special bond with her sister, Jeanette, who always made herself available whenever needed. Although she was a paraplegic, it didn’t interfere with her attending and enjoying family gatherings. She loved writing poetry and did so for any occasion. She loved reading novels, magazines, and can be remembered trading Comic books with her nephew. She really enjoyed watching T.V. if you had a question about any movie, actress or actor, she’d be the one to call. She could spend hours on the phone and loved coloring. We all know Nube was afraid of her own shadow, but tried to overcome her fears by quoting one of her favorite scriptures, 2 Timothy 1:7 “For God hasn’t given us the spirit of fear; but of Power and a Sound Mind”. She leaves to cherish their memories: two sons, Keith Morris (Valerie) and Kenneth Leighton (Rose); one daughter, Karen Adekumbe Leighton (Mike); fourteen grandchildren; Malika, Shamaya, Jalisa, Jerica, Gerard, Kenneth Jr., Maya, Nhyin, Tameka, Tamika, Keisha, Keyonna (Bubbles), Keon, Brenton, and Manasia;Thirteen great-grandchildren; three brothers, David, Nathan, and Phillip Leighton; three sisters, Jeanette Bruce, Brenda Roberts, and Gwendolyn Leighton; three sisters-in-law, Lucy Leighton, Julia Leighton, and Rosolyn Leighton; one brother-in-law Furman Roberts; nieces, and nephews and a host of other loving relatives and friends.
