Jane A. Johnson

Jane A. Johnson was born to Mamie and Charles Johnson, Sr. on August 20, 1942 of Beaverdam, Virginia. At an early age she was baptized and joined the Union Baptist Church, and remained a loyal member and patron until her death. Although her family lineage is grounded in Virginia, Jane moved to Washington, D.C. a few years after graduating from high school and remained in the Washington metropolitan area for 54 years. Jane was a dedicated worker and believed in “doing things right- the first time.” She demonstrated that strength and focus in both her professional and personal life. Selflessly sacrificing all she had, she raised a daughter who would go on to attend top-tiered educational institutions, and who now serves as superintendent of Prince Edward County Schools. While raising her daughter and taking care of family, Jane worked for several years at the Boy Scouts of America, and eventually transitioned to the United Mine Workers of America Health and Retirement Funds (The Funds). During Jane’s 24-year tenure at The Funds, she developed life-long friendships and established a reputation as an outstanding team member. Upon retirement from The Funds, Jane relaxed for only six months before joining the Kohl’s Department Store team. Affectionately known as “Miss Jane”, she served as a customer service representative for 17 years. Jane loved interacting with the customers and, again, found life-long friends in many of her colleagues. In November of 2018, Jane was diagnosed with metastasized lung cancer. As with all things, she continued to move through life with fierce determination to enjoy family and friends, and to maintain normalcy. She went through life with no fear and stated during her time of illness, “Life is full change and this is just another change. I have had many in my lifetime.” She succumbed to the disease on June 15, 2019. Jane leaves a rich legacy of love, kindness, generosity and spirited grace. She is survived by her daughter, Dr. Barbara A. Johnson whom she lovingly referred to as “Candy.” Although she had only one biological daughter, she was “mom” to many others – specifically, Darryl Evans and Dr. Tamitha Campbell, who loved and cared for her until her death; and, she was “nana” to Jordyn and Sydney Campbell. Finally, Jane was pre-deceased by her father, Charles C. Johnson, Sr. and her brother, Leon Johnson. In addition to her daughter, she is survived by her mother, Mamie G. Johnson; a sister, Yvonne G. Cole (Chester); two brothers, Charles C. Johnson, Jr. (Janie Mae) and Douglas Johnson; a sister-in-law, Viola Johnson; a devoted aunt, Gloria Johnson, and a host of nieces, nephews, and devoted friends and neighbors.
