Iola F. Young

Let us celebrate the life of IOLA F. YOUNG (nee Freeman), who was born on December 28, 1928, in Aiken, South Carolina to the late General Freeman, Sr. and Maggie (Tyler) Freeman. She peacefully transitioned to her heavenly home to be with the Lord on April 24, 2024. Iola received her formal education at Hayden Church School in Aiken, South Carolina. She was a member of Hayden Baptist Church where she was baptized and accepted the Lord at an early age. In 1949, Iola married the late Frank C. Young. From this union, they were blessed with five children (three sons and two daughters). She was a devoted member of Mt. Calvary Star Baptist Church for well over twenty years. Over the years, she worked diligently and faithfully while serving on the following auxiliaries: Usher Board, Gospel Choir, Missionary Circle, Willing Workers and President of the Pastor’s Aide Committee. She later joined Union Bethel A.M.E. Church under the leadership of Elder Charles T. Sembly. There, among other activities and involvements, she was a member of the Senior Outreach Ministry. A conscientious and dedicated worker throughout her life, Iola was employed at USF&G and by the City of Baltimore. She retired from the City of Baltimore after 20 years of service. Iola was a beautiful person willing to help anyone that was in need. She was especially devoted to her family, and there was nothing that she wouldn’t do for them. Iola was preceded in death by her husband, Frank C. Young; one daughter, Yvonne Freeman; three sons, Linwood Young, Kenneth Young and Andre Michael Young; six brothers, Hezekiah Freeman, David Freeman, James Wesley Freeman, Daniel Freeman, Benjamin Freeman and General Freeman, Jr.; and three sisters, Jessie Freeman, Mozell Farrington and Maggie McConnell. She leaves many to cherish her memory including: two daughters, Melissa Sterling and Kimberly (Antonio) Reaves; one brother, Joseph Freeman; three sisters, Rebecca Walden, Essie Phillips, and Leola (Alvis, Sr.) Jenkins; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.
